John Mark Karr False Confession

John Mark Karr is a former schoolteacher who made international headlines in August 2006 when he falsely confessed to the 1996 murder of six-year-old child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey in Boulder, Colorado. His arrest, extradition from Thailand, and subsequent release after DNA evidence excluded him became one of the most embarrassing episodes in the long, troubled history of the Ramsey investigation.

Karr, born in 1964, had a disturbing history that predated his involvement in the Ramsey case. He had been a substitute teacher in multiple states and was arrested in 2001 in Sonoma County, California, on child pornography charges. He fled the United States before his trial date, eventually settling in Bangkok, Thailand, where he was teaching at an international school.

While living abroad, Karr began corresponding with University of Colorado journalism professor Michael Tracey, who had produced documentaries about the Ramsey case. On August 16, 2006, Karr was arrested by Thai immigration police at his apartment in Bangkok. Upon arrival, DNA samples taken from Karr did not match the unidentified male DNA found on JonBenet's clothing. Furthermore, investigators could not place Karr in Boulder at the time of the murder. His ex-wife stated that the family had been together in Alabama during Christmas 1996.

On August 28, 2006 — just 12 days after his arrest — Boulder prosecutors announced they would not file charges against Karr due to the DNA exclusion. The case highlighted the phenomenon of false confessions and the dangers of confirmation bias in high-profile criminal investigations.
