The Murdaugh family is an American family from the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. Three generations named Randolph Murdaugh served consecutively as circuit solicitor for the state's 14th judicial district between 1920 and 2006. The family's prominence led locals to call the five-county district "Murdaugh Country". In addition to the legal positions, Randolph Murdaugh Sr. established the Murdaugh family law firm, now called the Parker Law Group, which specializes in personal injury litigation.

VictimsPaul Murdaugh, Maggie Murdaugh

On the evening of June 7, 2021, Paul Murdaugh, 22, and his mother Margaret "Maggie" Murdaugh, 52, were found shot to death at the family's Moselle hunting property in Colleton County, South Carolina. Alex Murdaugh, 53, a third-generation attorney from one of the state's most powerful legal families, called 911 shortly after 10 p.m. to report finding their bodies. Paul had been scheduled to stand trial for a 2019 boating accident that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach.

Within weeks of the murders, a broader financial investigation began to unravel Alex's professional life. In September 2021, Murdaugh staged his own shooting in a roadside scheme intended to generate life insurance benefits for his son — an event that accelerated inquiry into his law practice. Investigators ultimately found he had defrauded clients and settlement funds of millions of dollars over many years; he was indicted on 99 financial crime counts. Cell phone evidence — particularly a video Paul had recorded from the dog kennels minutes before the killings — and testimony from a housekeeper placed Alex at the murder scene at the time of death, directly contradicting his alibi. The jury convicted him in under three hours.

The trial drew intense national attention for its examination of the Murdaugh family's generations-long dominance over legal institutions and law enforcement in South Carolina's Lowcountry, and for the breadth and duration of the alleged financial crimes. Judge Clifton Newman sentenced him to life without the possibility of parole.

Arrest & Murder Charges

Alex Murdaugh was arrested July 14, 2022, and charged with two counts of murder and two weapons charges in Colleton County. He was also separately arrested on financial crime charges across multiple proceedings.

Murder Trial & Conviction

Trial began January 23, 2023, in Walterboro, Colleton County. On March 2, 2023, [the jury convicted Murdaugh of two counts of murder](https://apnews.com/article/alex-murdaugh-murder-guilty-verdict-wife-son-south-carolina) and two weapons charges after deliberating approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. Judge Clifton Newman sentenced him to life without the possibility of parole.

Post-Conviction Appeal — Jury Tampering

Defense filed a motion for new trial alleging jury clerk Rebecca Hill had improperly influenced jurors. An evidentiary hearing in January 2024 before Judge Newman resulted in denial of the motion. The South Carolina Supreme Court is reviewing the murder conviction on appeal as of March 2026.

Financial Crimes

Murdaugh pleaded guilty in February 2023 to 22 counts of financial fraud in federal court and was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison, to run concurrently with his state life sentence.
